CASCADE TOWSNHIP, Mich. (WOOD) -- Car junkies know Tesla electric vehicles are one of the most talked about cars in the country. But now Tesla Motors has a presence in Michigan and not in the Detroit area.
Tesla's high-end electric cars have slowly become more visible around Michigan, and now the California-based company has its first physical presence right here in West Michigan.
"The former Rivera Tool and Die, now Tesla Michigan, was already making integral manufacturing parts for us. It made sense for us to adopt a supplier, now as one of our own," said Will Nicholas, a Tesla representative.
The building was built specifically for tool and die work. The company likes the fact that there are plenty of well-trained tool and die workers available in West Michigan.
The cost of the vehicles means they are not for everyone, but the company is working on a vehicle that will be in the $35,000 to $40,000 price range that should be available in a couple of years.
Not just that, but energy storage could become a big part of the business in the future as they continue to develop their battery technology.
There may be as many as 300 Teslas in Michigan but none of them were bought here. Michigan law prohibits direct sales and that is the only way you can buy a Tesla.
"We would like to see at some point brick and mortar locations that would be able to sell and service our vehicles. We are not quite there yet," Nicholas said.
The only Tesla facility in Michigan is currently being renovated and the company anticipates hiring more workers in West Michigan as their market expands.
