Deputies link 4 recent armed robberies

Kent County

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Sam Singh was working overnight at the Grandville Market in Grand Rapids on Dec. 11 when three masked men entered the store looking to rob the place.

Singh said two of them walked behind the counter, while the third crawled like a dog to the front of it.

“He just ducked down and came all the way here, like I couldn’t see him,” Singh explained to 24 Hour News 8 Tuesday. “Then he jumped on the counter. It was just fast.”

With a gun pointed at him and his hands held together by one the robbers, Singh was left to watch as the perps piled cigarettes, liquor and eventually about $400 into a duffle bag.

“I was just scared,” he remembered. “I was doing what they told me to do.”

The robbers eventually made their way out, but it appears they weren’t done.

On Dec. 28, the J & K Party Store off Plainfield Avenue NE near Leonard Street was robbed. On Saturday, the Circle K on West River Drive near Pinedell Avenue in Plainfield Township was targeted. And Monday night, an attempted robbery unfolded at the Fast-Lane Party Store on Buchanan Avenue SW north of Brown Street in Grand Rapids.

All four robberies happened in the overnight hours, involved exactly three masked suspects and involved weapons.

“Yes, we believe these are the same suspects,” Kent County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Joel Roon confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

He said his investigators are working with the Grand Rapids Police Department and Kentwood police on the cases, and looking at additional robberies to see if they’re connected.

No one has gotten hurt so far, but police are growing worried.

“Especially in situations like this, where we see activity that is likely related and it’s continuing, it’s important now to really hit the communication piece,” Roon said. “To start making people aware, to start making citizens and these employees of these locations vigilant.”

“There is a lot of reason for concern,” he added.

The owner of the Grandville Market, located on Grandville Avenue SW near Hall Street, has several surveillance cameras, as do many of the other places that were robbed. Investigators are reviewing the footage as they continue to work the case.

If you have any information that can help in the investigation, you’re asked to call the sheriff’s office at 616.632.6100, GRPD at 616.456.3400 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
