KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The 16-year-old Grand Rapids girl who was found murdered in a wooded area in Kalamazoo was asphyxiated, according to her death certificate.
The cause of death listed on the death certificate of Mujey Dumbuya is asphyxia, including strangulation.
Dumbuya was last seen Jan. 24 when she left her home to catch a bus to East Kentwood High School. Her body was found four days later in a wooded area in Kalamazoo.
She was set to testify against former Kentwood Public Schools employee Quinn James, who is accused of repeatedly raping the teen last summer. Police are working to determine if he was involved in her death in any way.
James’ girlfriend, Tiara Burnett, has been charged with perjury involving the investigation into the death of the teen. On Tuesday, her case was bound over to circuit court after her preliminary exam was waived.
**Correction: A previous version of this article stated James was not a person of interest in Dumbuya’s murder. That was outdated information. He is being called a person of interest in the case.
