Cascade Twp. firefighters rescue doe in ice

Kent County

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A doe that fell through the ice on Thornapple River has been reunited with her fawn, thanks to the quick work of the Cascade Township Fire Department.

The township says crews were dispatched to the river Thursday morning after someone spotted the doe struggling in the icy water near Camelback Bridge as her anxious fawn watched from the bank.

Firefighters used a Nebulus ice rescue system rigged with ropes and pulleys to save the doe, which leapt to safety and made a “triumphant freedom run.”

“A big shout out to our crews for protecting all the creatures who call Cascade home” the township exclaimed in a Facebook video post of the rescue.

The entire operation took about a half hour and served as a valuable training opportunity for the fire department, Chief Adam Magers said.
