PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An 9-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by an SUV his mother was driving Tuesday outside a school in Kent County.
It happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. near the Chandler Woods Charter Academy, located at 6895 Samrick Ave. NE north of Post Drive NE in Plainfield Township.
Sgt. Joel Roon said a third-grader from the school was hit by the SUV in the school parking lot.
Authorities say surveillance footage shows the boy hanging from the passenger side front door handle before he loses his grip and is run over by the passenger side rear tire of the SUV.
It’s unclear why the boy was hanging from the door handle.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
***CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story listed the boy’s age as 8 years old, based on information from investigators. This story has since been updated to reflect the child’s current age if 9 years old.***
