GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two firefighters were injured while responding to an apartment fire in Grand Rapids Saturday morning.

It happened around 9 a.m. at a Ridgewood Apartments complex in the 2100 block of Woodburn Drive.

Responding firefighters found smoke and flames from one apartment unit, the Grand Rapids Fire Department told News 8. The building was evacuated.

GRFD say the firefighters were able to contain the fire at first, but 50 mph winds started to make things more difficult and the fire started to spread rapidly to other apartments.

Two firefighters were injured while responding to the fire, one with a neck injury due to a roof that collapsed, and the other with a leg injury. It is not known how severe the injuries are.

A total of 24 apartment units have either fire damage or water damage, GRFD says.
