SPENCER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman and two children died in a crash near Cedar Springs Thursday night, according to a spokesperson from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened around 8:10 p.m. Thursday on 18 Mile Road near Harvard Avenue in Spencer Township.

On Friday, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office said a Mitsubishi Eclipse lost control, crossed the center and struck an Audi SUV. Deputies said Thursday night a car hydroplaned into another car during severe thunderstorms in the area.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 22-year-old Gowen man, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The front-seat passenger, a 21-year-old Gowen woman, was found dead. Two girls, ages 1 and 3, were in car seats in the rear seats. Both were pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Audi driver, a 42-year-old Sparta man, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Their names have not been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said weather was a factor and that speed and alcohol could also have been involved.
