KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo police say an officer had to shoot a dog, killing it, after it attacked someone Wednesday.

It happened around 11:10 a.m. in the 700 block of Egleston Avenue, west of Portage Street. Witnesses told the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety that a 60-year-old man was riding his bicycle when the dog attacked him.

KDPS said in a release that when an officer arrived within minutes of a 911 call, he found the man trying to fight off the dog, which was biting his arm. Police said the man and dog were “covered in blood.”

The officer had to shoot the dog to stop the attack, KDPS says, and the animal died.

The 60-year-old man was hospitalized with several severe injuries. His condition was not known Wednesday evening.

KDPS says it doesn’t know who owned the dog.
