KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man fatally stabbed his wife in the Kalamazoo area and fled to Berrien County before being caught, authorities say.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on the 700 block of Campbell Avenue north of W. Main Street, the Kalamazoo Township Police Department said.
Police say they were called to Campbell on a report that a 37-year-old woman had been stabbed by her husband. They did not say who reported the stabbing. The woman was rushed to the hospital, where she died. Her name was not released Sunday.
The husband, a 43-year-old, took off after the stabbing, police say. He was later found in Berrien County and arrested. Police did not release any information about how he was found or the circumstances of his arrest.
The suspect’s name was not immediately released pending formal charges, which could come as early as Monday.
Police said three children are now being cared for by other family members.
Neighbors told News 8 on Sunday afternoon that the family had moved into the neighborhood about a decade ago. They said the parents worked a lot, so they didn’t see them often, but they would often see the kids — two boys and a girl — playing in the yard.
“My heart hurts so much for the family and the kids,” one neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said. “We’ve lived here almost 30 years and something like this has never happened.”
Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Silent Observer at 269.343.2100 or Kalamazoo Township police at 269.488.8911.
