IONIA, Mich. (WOOD) — Detectives are investigating the death of an inmate who collapsed at the Ionia County Jail.
The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office says 48-year-old Stewart Nelson Hill of Portland told officers he was not feeling well at 4:53 a.m. Friday. Authorities say jail staff moved him to a holding cell for observation and contacted medical staff.
Authorities say about a half hour later, Hill had just received his breakfast tray when he collapsed on the floor.
Officers immediately called emergency medical responders and began trying to revive Hill via CPR and an automated external defibrillator. Paramedics then arrived and took Hill to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he died.
Authorities say an autopsy is pending.
The sheriff’s office says Hill had been in the jail since Tuesday on Friend of the Court warrants.
