PORTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Eastbound I-96 in Ionia County was closed for several hours due to a two-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck Tuesday morning.
It happened around 4:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near Portland Road, exit 73, in Portland Township.
Michigan State Police said a semi-truck was heading eastbound when the driver began to slow down for traffic. The driver lost control, ran off the road and overturned. Another vehicle lost control then struck the trailer of the semi-truck.
The driver of the vehicle, a 53-year-old Ionia woman, was taken to the hospital for treatment of a head injury. She is listed in stable condition. The semi-truck driver, a 54-year-old Portland man, was not injured.
MSP investigators believe poor road conditions and excessive speed were factors in the crash. There were reports of several other crashes in the area around the same time.
The crash remains under investigation.
The highway was closed between the 73 and 76 mile marker for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
