PORTLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — It took crews hours Thursday to cap a large gas leak in Portland.
The leak, which was discovered before 3:30 p.m., was in a gas main along W. Grand River Avenue near West Street.
Officials said while Consumers Energy crews were working that people who live within a block of the leak were evacuated and nearby roads were shut down.
The Portland Area Fire Authority said that once the leak was sealed off shortly after 9 p.m., teams started making sure it was safe for people to return to their homes and a lane of Grand River Avenue remained closed while Consumers finished fixing the main.
Everything was cleared up around 10 p.m.
The cause of the breach was not immediately released.
