LYONS, Mich. (WOOD) — After searching for hours Sunday evening, authorities found an 8-year-old boy who went missing in the Ionia County village of Lyons.
Ionia County Sheriff Charlie Noll said Kaiven Simon was found safe behind the fire barn along the Grand River.
“My understanding is he was cold and scared,” Noll said. “He’s being checked out but no injuries and doing as best as he could with the situation he was put in.”
Kaiven had gone missing in the area of Bridge Street near Baldwin and Libhart streets. Noll said he went out to play around 5:30 p.m. and his mother called 911 around 6 p.m. when the family dog returned home without him.
Several police and fire agencies aided in the search for the boy. Noll said they started at the house and worked their way out, going door-to-door. A Michigan State Police helicopter was also called in.
The fire barn, where Kaiven was found sitting next to a tree, is about half a mile from where he went missing.
Noll said there was no immediate indication of anything suspicious, but that the investigation was ongoing.
He praised the work from all the agencies that helped look for Kaiven.
“It was a great end to what could’ve been a tragic story,” Noll said.
