Hope College welcomes first frozen yogurt drone delivery

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Hope College was the scene for drone history Tuesday.

The campus welcomed what’s believed to be the first frozen yogurt drone delivery in the world. The drone dropped off frozen yogurt to students as part of the test run.

Hope College’s Pine Grove is the only spot where Holland’s Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt will deliver via drone. It’s part of a pilot delivery program titled Project Flying Orange Unicorn. The service officially starts Wednesday by appointment only.

“”We think long term that’s where the industry is heading in terms of engaging with millennial clientele who loves new technology but also ways to add convenience by using technology so why not be on the four end of that,” said Geoff Goodman, president of Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt.

However, don’t expect a speedy delivery if you ask for the drone. The aircraft took 15 minutes to travel slightly less than a mile Tuesday, from the shop at 184 S. River Ave. to the Pine Grove on campus. The drone can reach speeds up to 30 mph and carry up to 30 pounds.

The cost for drone delivery is still being determined, but customers must place an order for 30 frozen yogurts.

If the pilot program succeeds, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt plans to expand the service to more locations and potential include other foods.
