GRPD: Death of man found in burnt car deemed accidental

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a Nov. 12 car fire that led the death of a Grand Rapids man.

Officers Tuesday identified the man found in the burned out car as 21-year-old Oliver Hernandez-Lorenzo, who lived in the 700 block of Olympia Street SW.

He was in a car parked in an alley driveway outside his home when neighbors said they heard multiple loud explosions just before 3:30 a.m. and saw the car engulfed in flames.

The Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined Hernandez-Lorenzo died from inhaling the smoke and/or toxins from the car as it burned. Authorities have deemed his death accidental.

Neighbors told 24 Hour News 8 Hernandez-Lorenzo was a friendly, church-going man.
