GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Griffins and Safe Kids Greater Grand Rapids have teamed up to give away 200 helmets to jump-start this summer’s Put A Lid On It bike safety program.
The helmets are being distributed at two Lids at the Library events, the first of which was held at the Grand Rapids Public Library on Tuesday afternoon. The second event will take place at the Kent District Library in Grandville on June 28 at 2 p.m.
“We’re really trying to get those helmets fitted properly,” said Jennifer Hoekstra of Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, which is presenting the Put A Lid On It program. “It’s not always about just having a helmet, it’s about wearing it correctly. So each of our volunteers is going through the steps with the kids to learn how to wear it properly, therefore reduce injuries.”
The Griffins and Safe Kids will fit the first 100 kids at each event for free bicycle helmets. Children from ages 1 to 12 are eligible. Parents or legal guardians must be present.
Also as part of the Put A Lid On It program, now in its 13th year, children ages 17 and younger can win two free tickets to a Griffins game if they go on to the team’s website and pledge to always wear a helmet when they ride their bike. They will also be entered into a drawing to win a new bike.
The Griffins are also making a donation to Safe Kids, which will use the money to buy 100 more helmets for distribution at various events this summer.
Parents can find tips on the right helmet to buy and how to get their child to wear them at the Griffins’ website.
