GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — With the help of community donations and volunteers, the Whitecaps Community Foundation warmed hearts and filled hundreds of stomachs this Giving Tuesday.
Jessica Muzevuca with the West Michigan Whitecaps says the Whitecaps Community Foundation has donated just under $1.5 million this year, but much of that giving happens behind the scenes.
“This year, we wanted to make sure that we were out in public and everyone could see that you need to be giving back,” she said.
Tuesday, the Whitecaps Community Foundation visited Grand Rapids’ Heartside Park to serve up lunch and hand out 350 winter survival kits to people in need.
“We’re just making sure everyone has a hot meal, some gloves, everything to stay warm because the temperatures dropped,” said Muzevuca.
Each kit contained items the Whitecaps collected during a community donation drive last month. Local chefs cooked up the pulled pork sandwiches, grits and green beans for Tuesday’s meal.
Muzevuca says any leftover donations will go to local missions.
