VIDEO: Arsonist caught in the act in GR; police seek tips

Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police are looking for an arsonist captured in the act by home security cameras.

The fire happened early Saturday morning in the 1100 block of Pine Street NW, near Leonard Street and Alpine Avenue.

A homeowner called police around 2 a.m., saying his garage and pickup truck were on fire.

Firefighters stopped the flames before they could spread to the house, but the truck was destroyed and the garage was considerably damaged.

No one was injured.

The homeowner’s security cameras were rolling at the time of the crime. About nine minutes into one recording, a man walks up to the pickup truck with a gasoline tank, douses the vehicle and a part of the garage, lights it on fire and runs away.

Officers have ruled out their first suspect, who had visited the house just before the fire. Detectives are now hoping someone will recognize images of the arsonist from the surveillance video.

Anyone with information about the suspect or crime is encouraged to contact the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616.456.3400 or Silent Observer.
