Toy, dinosaur exhibits coming to GR Public Museum

Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Public Museum is welcoming two special exhibits this fall.

One of them is a look back at the toys that have shaped this and previous generations. Museum leaders hope grandparents, parents and children will be able to enjoy the interactive “TOYS!” collection together.

“We think that play is important. It’s one of the most important for kids as they’re learning. It’s important for all of us as adults to continue to play so we have that balance in our lives. And we think this is a great place to do it,” Alex Forist, the museum’s chief curator, told 24 Hour News 8. “We hope everyone will come play in the toys exhibit with us.”

The exhibit includes some pieces that belong to the museum and others that were borrowed from community members. Presentations will be in English, Spanish and Braille.

“TOYS!” opens Oct. 27. The museum opens at 10 a.m. on the its first day, but there will be a special preview for museum members for two hours beforehand. Members can RSVP online.

The other fall exhibition, a traveling collection called “Expedition: Dinosaur,” opens Oct. 14.

It features life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, some of which visitors will be able to control. It also explains new research methods that have allowed scientists to learn more about dinosaurs, includes interactive displays on the giant reptiles’ movement and digestion, and teaches about the history of paleontology.

The exhibition, which is sponsored in part by WOOD TV8, will also have two special events: a breakfast event and an opening party. Tickets are already on sale through the museum’s website.
