GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) —  Power has been restored to the majority of Consumers Energy customers hit by an outage Monday afternoon in the Grand Rapids area.

The outage affected customers in the 28th Street area east of US-131, mostly between Division and Kalamazoo avenues.

Consumers Energy said it took the first report about the outage just before 2 p.m. Monday. At that time, 857 customers were affected.

A company spokesman says the number of customers impacted went up to 1,877 shortly before 3 p.m., when Consumers Energy had to de-energize the system to make it safe for crews to repair downed lines on 28th Street near Division Avenue.

A photo sent to ReportIt showed smoke rising near the downed lines. The fire department had blocked the eastbound lanes.

Crews restored power to the majority of customers before 5 p.m. Monday.
