GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Some big changes are coming to the movie series in downtown Grand Rapids this summer.
After five years at Ah-Nab-Awen Park, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. announced Wednesday that this summer the event will be held at 555 Monroe Avenue near I-196. Because of this, Movies in the Park will now be known as Movies on Monroe.
Organizers say the city’s newly purchased riverfront property in the Monroe North neighborhood gives them a new place to play movies along the Grand River.
They say the new location is close to many neighborhood bars and restaurants. It’s also easily accessible by bus and drivers will be able to park in one of the thousands of nearby parking spots.
Even though no permanent changes can happen on the property until the Grand River restoration project is completed, organizers say Movies on Monroe is a way they can experiment with how the public space might be used in the future.
The event remains free and open to the public. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. with shows starting at 7:30 p.m. each night. Moviegoers will need to bring their own chairs, drinks and snacks.
Organizers revealed the changes early Wednesday morning as well as this year’s movie lineup, which includes:
- June 8: “The Greatest Showman” and “Big”
- June 22: “The Princess Bride” and “The Big Lebowski”
- July 6: “Major Payne” and “Saving Private Ryan”
- July 20: “Westside Story” and “The Shape of Water”
- Aug. 3: “Shrek” and “Hidden Figures”
- Aug. 17: “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther”
