Mercantile Bank adds chatbot for easier access

Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids-based Mercantile Bank of Michigan has launched a new chatbot aimed at making it easier to keep an eye on your money.

Customers can ask the MercMoney Chatbot for updates on their accounts and use it to set budgets, among other things. It runs through SMS, Facebook Messenger and Google Home. Access with Amazon Alexa is expected soon.

“It’s the ability to access your finances in one place where it’s convenient to you,” John Schulte of Mercantile Bank explained. “You can ask it questions about your spending, your budget: ‘What do I have left in my grocery budget?’ ‘How much have I spent at Amazon this month?’ Those type of questions making your finances easily accessible from wherever you are.”

He said the program brings together all of your financial information in one place.

The chatbot rolled out Wednesday on Financial Health Matters Day, which this year is focused on students, who are increasingly burdened with debt.
