GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kent County prosecutor has dropped charges against a man arrested in connection to a December 2017 sex assault in Grand Rapids.

Prosecutor Chris Becker confirmed Tuesday his office dropped the charges against Xavier Davis after tests showed DNA on a condom wrapper did not match Davis. Becker also told 24 Hour News 8 his office “had issues” with witnesses.
“We did not feel we could prove it (guilt) beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury,” he said.
Davis was arrested and charged in January after tipsters identified him as the man depicted in a sketch of the suspect.
The victim in the Dec. 28 attack on Oak Park Drive SE reported being held at gunpoint and sexually assaulted.
24 Hour News 8 has messages into the Grand Rapids police to find out if they’ve made any new arrests in the case. Check back for updates on woodtv.com throughout the day.
