GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The man charged in two Grand Rapids murders is going to prison for at least one of them.
A jury on Thursday found Vicente Rodriguez-Ortiz guilty of first-degree murder in the Jan. 23, 2018 shooting death of 17-year-old Andrew Hawkins.
Police found Hawkins on Second Street NW near Garfield Avenue, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the hospital.
Rodriguez-Ortiz was arrested a day after the shooting, less than four blocks from the scene of the murder. Police said he tried to get away from officers and they used a K-9 to stop him. Rodriguez-Ortiz was hospitalized for treatment of a dog bite, after which he was jailed.
The jury also found Rodriguez-Ortiz guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and using a firearm to commit a felony. He’s expected back in court for sentencing on April 23.
Rodriguez-Ortiz charged with murdering Laurie Lundberg, who was shot and killed outside her Lincoln Avenue NW home on March 18, 2017. He’s scheduled to go to trial in that case exactly two years after her murder.
