GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids Public Schools will hold its School Choice Expo and Family Winter Carnival Tuesday.
The expo is a free event offering GRPS students, parents and prospective families the opportunity to learn more about school choices while enjoying a winter celebration. Children’s activities include a bounce house, winter themed games, activities and prizes. Dinner is also provided for free.
Grand Rapids Public Schools offers the largest selection of schools in West Michigan, including many themed schools and centers of innovation.
In many theme schools, students have an opportunity for place-based education and extracurricular programming to enhance learning.
Centers of innovation are a unique, public-private partnership that offers students a rigorous classroom education with opportunities to connect with professional mentors, job shadowing and internships. It is also a chance to earn college and trade school credits or career certification.
Principals from each theme school and center of innovation will be at the expo to share information about their school and showcase what makes them unique. Also, to answer any questions that the parents and students might have.
“This is a chance to really come investigate what those choices are, meet and interact with people,” said GRPS spokesperson John Helmhold. “There is one thing to look online, what a one-size-fits-all rating maybe on grade schools.com versus actually talking to a human being, getting to feel what the culture of that school is, what the leadership looks like. it’s just really important for parents to get that hands-on feel.”
Applications for these schools are required and seats are limited. The application deadline is Jan. 31, 2019.
A paper application is available at any GRPS school or the GRPS administrative building, located at 1331 Franklin Street SE. Applications are available in English and Spanish.
GRPS School Choice Expo and Family Winter Carnival is from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at City High Middle School, located at 1720 Plainfield Avenue N.E.
