GRPD: Man flees officer, crashes stolen car

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say a man crashed a stolen car in Grand Rapids Wednesday evening.

The Grand Rapids Police Department says an officer attempted to pull the vehicle over along Monroe Center near Division Avenue around 7 p.m., but the driver took off headed south. The officer didn’t give chase.

Police then discovered the vehicle had been stolen on the city’s northwest side.

Later, the same vehicle crashed into another car in the area of Stewart Street and Burton Avenue.

The man refused to get out of his car at first after the crash, but eventually gave himself up. GRPD said he appeared to be intoxicated.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is expected to face charges of operating while intoxicated, auto theft, resisting and obstructing police and fleeing an eluding police.
