GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police are identifying the driver they say likely died after crashing his car into Plaster Creek.

Officers say 25-year-old Austin James Huisingh of Hudsonville was the only person inside the black Audi that witnesses said was barreling down Market Avenue SW  before the Saturday night crash. Police say the vehicle crossed the center line into the oncoming lanes before jumping the curb and crashing through the guardrail into the water below.

Witnesses said they didn’t see anyone emerge from the creek, but the Audi was empty when a crane lifted it out of Plaster Creek the next day.

On Friday, police concluded they did not believe Huisingh survived the crash, but attempts to recover his body have been hampered by strong currents and elevated water levels caused by rain and snowmelt.

Officers said the Grand Rapids Fire Department is still searching the creek on a daily basis, and the Kent County Dive Team would return to the water to search once flooding subsides.

Anyone with information in this case is encouraged to contact police at 616.456.3322 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
