GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police say they have an erratic driver in custody in connection to a series of crashes that injured four people, including the suspect.
It started around 3 p.m. Thursday after a multi-vehicle crash on US-131 near Franklin Street SW. While Michigan State Police troopers were on the way to the crash, a 30-year-old man involved in the crash took off.
After leaving the scene, several people called 911 to report the erratic driver.
Calls led police to Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital, where he had briefly parked before driving over the curbs.
Hospital security guards followed him and called Grand Rapids police, who couldn’t find him until officers got reports of a series of crashes involving at least four vehicles at Burton Street and Buchanan Avenue SW shortly before 3:30 p.m.
“The first three cars up front were all smoking and then you could see glass going from one side to the other side. And you could also see I believe it was the T-boned vehicle’s driver door actually busted open,” said Michael Perez, who witnessed the last crash.
Police suspect the driver was intoxicated. A witness said they saw part of the suspect’s bone as he tried to run after the crashes, but officers said he was taken into custody.
While the driver and three others were injured, the total number of people injured is unclear. At least five vehicles were hit.
Burton and Buchanan were blocked off as medical crews responded, but the roadway has since reopened.
