GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A second person is in custody in connection the murder of an East Kentwood High School senior.
Grand Rapids police confirmed Thursday they arrested an 18-year-old woman from Kentwood in connection to Sunday’s shooting death of 17-year-old James King. However, she has not yet been charged with a crime.
King’s cousin told 24 Hour News 8 they were selling marijuana in the parking lot of the Towne & Country Shopping Center when one of their customers tried to rob them.
When King realized what was happening, he tried to get out of the back seat of the suspect’s car where the sale was taking place, but was shot in the head, his cousin said.
The cousin said he held King in the parking lot at Kalamazoo Avenue and 44th Street as he waited for rescuers to arrive. King died at the scene.
East Kentwood High School junior Ahmed Hasan was formally charged Wednesday with open murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in the case. A judge set the 17-year-old’s bond at $500,000.
Grand Rapids police say they’re still looking for at least two more suspects. It’s unclear if they have the actual shooter in custody.
