GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The first-ever pipe and drums group for the Grand Rapids Fire Department made their first appearance during Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The group has only been practicing nine months, but sounded like seasoned performers despite along the route.
“We only know one song, but we’re going to play it as best we can in the cold. The cold weather isn’t great for pipes but we’re going to do it and I’m just excited for this,” Matt Hutter, the GRFD Pipe Major told 24 Hour News 8 before the parade.
Hutter explained their duty as firefighters will always be the priority, but the group is also a way to continue community outreach.
“Simply for just pride for the fire department, for our community. Now we have another way to have another presence in this community and be proud of what we got going here,” Hutter added.
