GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Drivers who park in Grand Rapids are in for changes starting this week.

City officials say they’re switching their parking app service from ParkMobile to Motu.

Like ParkMobile, the Motu app allows drivers to ditch the change and pay for on-street metered parking via their smartphone.

However, the new app is customized for Grand Rapids, all the way down to its name. City officials say the app’s moniker comes from Grand Rapids’ motto – Motu Viget, meaning “strength in activity.”

Motu allows drivers to monitor their parking meter sessions, view payment history and receive email receipts. The city says drivers can also extend their parking time free of cost using Motu.

The Motu app will be available for Androids and iPhones Thursday, but drivers can continue using the ParkMobile app for city parking through Monday, according to Grand Rapids spokesman Steve Guitar.

In a message to its users, ParkMobile says it will continue to be accepted at Grand Valley State University and private parking facilities within the city, as well as Kalamazoo, Traverse City and Petoskey.
