GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids’ Riverside Park will soon get a face-lift, making it easier for people with disabilities to enjoy a trip on the Grand River.

The city announced Monday it was awarded a $150,000 state grant to revamp the park. The grant, made possible through state recreation passport fees, will be combined with $80,000 in park millage funding to upgrade amenities at the park’s lagoon.

The project is slated to begin in the spring of 2020 and will include replacing the old dock with a “universal-access” canoe and kayak launch. City officials say the dock will feature guide rails, launch rollers to easily move out kayaks and canoes, and a transfer bench for people to move from wheelchair to watercraft.

The plan also calls for adding handicapped-accessible parking, paved pathways for easier access, and replacing the current portable restroom with a version accessible to people with disabilities.

The city says the project will allow more community members to kayak and canoe, which are among the top recreational activities in Grand Rapids.
