GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A brownfield grant has been awarded to a plan to build a 13-story tower in downtown Grand Rapids.
The Michigan Strategic Fund Board announced Tuesday that $2.2 million would go to clean up the site at 10 Ionia Avenue NW along Fulton Street, near Van Andel Arena.
The Portage-based Hinman Company plans to develop the existing triangular surface parking lot site into a 13-story, 135,555-square-foot tower with hotel rooms and retail space. In all, the project is expected to cost some $36 million.
The company applied for the grant amid concerns the site may have been contaminated by materials left behind by a former gas station. But some residents say that since Hinman bought the property, it should pay for the cleanup rather than rely on a state subsidy.
