GR Dairy Queen surprises young patients with ice cream

Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A day before Dairy Queen restaurants nationwide celebrate the start of spring with free ice cream cones, children at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital were treated to a sweet surprise.

Tuesday, the owners of Walker Street Dairy Queen on Grand Rapids’ West Side delivered cups of vanilla, chocolate and twist soft-serve ice cream to the young patients and their families.

Restaurant co-owner John Hunt says their grandson was treated at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital seven years ago and they love to give back. But the reason they were going door to door inside the hospital Tuesday goes even deeper.

“These kids aren’t able to get out tomorrow to get their cone so we thought we’d bring the cone to them,” said Hunt.

“After everything we’ve been through, this is like the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I mean honestly, bringing ice cream to a kid is like bringing in their puppies. You know I love it,” said Brecken Rawson, mother of 4-year-old Savannah.

March 20 is Free Cone Day at participating non-mall Dairy Queens across the country. Customers can stop in and get a free small cone filled with vanilla soft-serve ice cream.
