GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The largest brewery in Michigan is now testing out the idea of cannabidiol beer.
Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids decided to start a CBD beer pilot program this week.
“It’s really exciting,” Founders Vice President of Brewing Operations Alec Mull said. “We are all talking about this right now. All brewers are talking about it.”
CBD is found in cannabis and hemp. Studies show it can ease pain without any psychedelic effects. It’s legal and sold all over. Now it could be in your favorite beer.Would you try beer with CBD oil in it?
“I’m really excited to be a part of it with Founders,” Mull said. “It really started with us trying these products personally.”
The oil form of CBD will be used during testing. By law, CBD oil has to contain .3 percent THC or lower. THC is the chemical that gives marijuana its psychoactive effects.
CBD would likely be added near the end of the brewing process. The oil has an unpleasant flavor, so the challenge will be for Founders to brew a beer that still tastes good.
Once brewers get the right combination, they have to see if consumers would buy a CBD beer and if the federal Food and Drug Administration will approve it.
So is CBD the future of beer?
“No,” Mull said. “I don’t think so. I think it’s got a niche fit and it might someday become the future of beer. But you know beer has been around for a millennia and I think that it’s going to go through some changes, but untimely we love beer. We love beer for lots of different reasons and it’s not because of CBD.”
