GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Cirque du Soleil will be at Van Andel Arena this weekend and, perhaps appropriately, it will be on the ice.
“It’s the first time Cirque du Soleil tackles the ice and brings acrobatics and ice skating together to one performance,” Julie Desmarais, the tour manager for Cirque du Soleil Crystal, told 24 Hour News 8 during a Thursday sneak peek. “Cirque du Soleil always aims to push boundaries and always tries to surprise audiences by always creating something new.”
She said the show brings in figure skaters, extreme skaters and acrobats together.
“The beautiful thing about Crystal is everyone had to learn something about each discipline. So all the acrobats had to learn to skate and all the skaters had to learn how to do acrobatics,” Desmarais said.
“Combining the ice skating, we think of speed, we think of motion. And then we combine it with acrobatics. We add the element of defying gravity and super high energy,” she continued.
Shows run Thursday through Sunday. Tickets can be bought at the Van Andel Arena box office and on Ticketmaster.
