Chief: GRPD's CALEA accreditation 'the gold seal'

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Saturday, the Grand Rapids Police Department will accomplish something few police agencies do: gaining national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

GRPD Chief David Rahinsky said it’s something fewer than 4 percent of police agencies across the country achieve.

"For the community, they need to recognize that this really is the gold seal, this is a gold medal, it's the Better Business Bureau recognition, for lack of a better analogy, that the Grand Rapids Police Department is doing it right,” said Rahinsky.

The CALEA review consists of onsite visits, policy and procedure review, along with employee and the community interviews.

"We received a glowing report,” added Rahinsky. “Generally speaking, the accreditation process takes about three years. We went through it in about half that time, which just shows where our starting place was.” Incidents like when an innocent 11-year-old Grand Rapids girl who was handcuffed were reviewed during the 18-month accreditation process.

CALEA made a point to credit GRPD for how they've worked to improve community relations since that incident and others where community trust was damaged.

The accreditation will be formally presented on Saturday during the national CALEA conference which is being held in Grand Rapids this year.
