GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Calvin College is moving up the date when it will become Calvin University.
The college says its official name change will take place on July 10, 2019, coinciding with the birthday of its namesake, John Calvin.
Previously in its spring meeting, the college’s board of trustees unanimously approved switching to Calvin University in 2020, during the school’s 100th anniversary.
The name change is part of the school’s Vision 2030 plan.
Calvin College said the change is meant to highlight the strength of its academic programs and academic innovation. The school said the term “university” is also more recognizable for international students.
