GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Drivers in downtown Grand Rapids encountered new roadblocks on and around the Pearl Street Bridge Sunday.
City officials say construction and renovations to the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel are closing Pearl Street between Front and Campau avenues for several weeks.
The closures started at 6 p.m. Sunday to allow crews to bring in a crane for fascade work to the Amway Grand Plaza hotel. Grand Rapids officials say workers will be replacing the building front with more energy-efficient materials and windows.
Drivers are encouraged to follow the posted detours, which will route westbound vehicles onto Monroe Avenue to Michigan/Bridge streets to Mt. Vernon Avenue. Eastbound drivers will take Scribner Avenue to Michigan Street to Monroe Avenue.
While visitors will still be able to access the hotel parking ramp, Amway Grand Plaza’s turnaround on Pearl Street will be limited to vehicles entering from Monroe Avenue. The city says the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and Grand Rapids Public Museum will remain accessible on Front Avenue.
