Affordable housing proposed for GR’s West Side

Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Rockford Construction has announced plans to build a new, affordable housing development on Grand Rapids’ West Side.

Rockford Construction, with partner Inner City Christian Federation, on Tuesday released a plan for a new-mixed use building on First Street and Stocking Avenue NW that will have retail space on the first floor and up to 70 apartments on the upper floors.

The plan still needs approval on a zoning change for the subsidized housing development. Rockford Construction said it’s still seeking input from local residents and additional partners.

If the plan is approved, ICCF will be working with the city to apply for the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program. If successful, units would be available to residents whose incomes do not exceed 60 percent of the area median income.

Earlier this month, Rockford Construction announced it’s working with Meijer on a proposed new mixed-use development off Bridge Street NW between Stocking and Seward avenues that could bring a new grocery store to the West Side.
