GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man suspected of stabbing his estranged wife turned himself in to police on Thursday.

Julio Lara, 24, is accused of auto theft and assault with intent to commit murder, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Authorities say Lara stabbed his 24-year-old wife during an argument at a home on Graham Street near Grandville Avenue SW on Aug. 11. The woman was seriously hurt, but is expected to recover.

Lara has been jailed and could be arraigned as early as Friday, police said.

GRPD says he is not a U.S. citizen. He was previously deported in 2014 in connection to a serious assault.
