Grand Rapids parking prices going up Thursday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — It will cost you more to park in downtown Grand Rapids starting Thursday, but there will also be more free transportation options.

All on-street meter prices and some city parking lot rates are going up:

  • Hourly meter prices: $.50 parking is increasing to $1; $.75 parking to $1; and $1.25 to $1.50.
  • Parking lots: Short-term rates per half-hour will increase from $1 to $1.25. There will also be changes for monthly rates.

In exchange, free DASH bus service is being expanded. DASH buses will run for free from 6:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. on weekdays. Additionally, the Rapid’s Silver Line bus service will be free north of Wealthy Street.

The estimated $100,000 cost for free bus service is being covered by the city’s parking department.

Earlier this year, city officials told 24 Hour News 8 that parking rates were too low to begin with, but admitted they are using the increase as a way to encourage drivers to use outlying parking lots and free up more popular spots.
