GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Melting snow has forced Grand Rapids city officials to cancel free winter sports mini-lessons for children.
“Cannonsburg in the City” was slated for Sunday, Feb. 7 at Ah-Nab-Awen. Organizers pulled the plug on the event Tuesday, after milder temperatures and heavy rain depleted the snow cover.
“We were thrilled to bring this programming into the city and offer kids the chance to experience these types of winter sports close to home, but the weather just did not cooperate,” Parks and Recreation Director David Marquardt said in a news release Tuesday. “While colder weather and a minimal snowfall is expected by this weekend, our event just needed much more on the ground to promote safety and ensure a family-fun event.”
Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., Cannonsburg Ski Area, and Grand Rapids city officials teamed up to organize the event.
They hope to bring back the event next year “when, hopefully, El Niño doesn’t interfere,” Marquardt said.
Cannonsburg Ski Area is also blaming El Nino for their decision to close early on Tuesday.
“We apologize for any inconveniences but also ask for your patence again as we do our best to fight back against El Niño!!” the venue posted on its Facebook page.
