FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The 21-year-old killed in a hit-and-run in Kalamazoo will be laid to rest on Tuesday.
Nicolas Heil, a Western Michigan University student from Fruitport, died Wednesday night after he was struck by a vehicle while jogging in the 5400 block of KL Avenue in Oshtemo Township. Detectives found the SUV involved in the crash about two hours later in another apartment complex, the sheriff’s office stated in a Thursday afternoon news release. The driver, a 22-year-old woman from Kalamazoo, was questioned and arrested for failure to render aid, leaving the scene of a deadly crash and suspicion of driving under the influence.
According to his online obituary, Heil was a mechanical engineering student who had just finished his junior year. He played several sports in school, but was particularly fond of track.
According to the obituary, Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, as well as at 10 a.m. Tuesday The Lee Chapel on Harvey Street in Norton Shores. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Lee Chapel.
