PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) — A free new program in Van Buren County is uniting veterans with soul-soothing pets in need of a home.

Corps Companions matches service members and their families with comforting creatures from the Van Buren County Animal Control Shelter. All animals are free of charge, spayed or neutered and come fully vaccinated.

“It’s a way to give back to those that gave or are giving so much for us,” said kennel director Kasey Murphy.

Those eligible for the Corps Companions program include:

  • Veterans (retired or discharged)
  • Active military members
  • Families of a military member

For more information about Corps Companions, contact the Van Buren County Animal Control Shelter at 269.621.4624.

The Van Buren County Animal Control Shelter is also among 20 shelters holding free adoption events open to all potential pet owners. The Empty the Shelters Blitz Adoption event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the shelter.

The BISSELL Pet Foundation is covering adoption fees, however new owners are responsible for a $10 license fee. Each pet will go home with an AdoptBox and toy.
