Fire chief: Cats found dead in burned home there for a while

OTSEGO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police are investigating living conditions at an Allegan County home where firefighters found multiple dead cats.

Crews were called to the home in the 400 block of West Franklin Street in Otsego around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday for a fire.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and some flames were coming out of a window that broke from the heat of the fire. The fire chief said large quantities of storage totes and household items piled up throughout the house made it difficult for crews to find the source of the fire.

When firefighters put out the flames, they discovered numerous pets inside the home. The fire chief said multiple cats and at least one dog died from the smoke or heat of the fire, but there were other cats in the home that had been dead for some time.

No humans were injured in the fire, which is also under investigation.
