GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The FBI in Grand Rapids is warning local colleges about a scam targeting students.

According to an email from Calvin College, the FBI contacted them to report a scam in which students are told over the phone that they owe an “education tax.” The scammers also use the FBI’s phone number as a call back number.

The FBI said they took a call from one student who was going to pull money out of a savings account to pay the tax.

Calvin College urges students who receive a phone call saying they owe an “education tax” to call the Campus Safety Department immediately at 616.526.3333. This includes students who have already received the call recently.

Any student who has sent or handed over money for an alleged delinquent “education tax” should file a fraud report with the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Neither the IRS nor the FBI will call and demand payment over the phone for any type of alleged “delinquent taxes.”
