GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – A former Grand Rapids police officer convicted of sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend is going to prison.

Ryan Bruggink sobbed in court as a Judge Donald Johnston sentenced him to two to 15 years in prison.

Bruggink’s ex-girlfriend said he had forced his way into her home and sexually assaulted her in November 2014.

A jury found the former officer guilty of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in March, but returned a not guilty verdict on two other CSC charges and a first-degree home invasion charge.

In court Tuesday, Bruggink apologized for getting drunk the night of the incident. He said he should never have driven over to his girlfriend’s house that night and he should have held himself to a higher standard. Bruggink also asked the judge for mercy.

Bruggink still faces child pornography charges in a second case involving a 17-year-old he allegedly had a relationship with. According to court documents, the teenager sent Bruggink several pornographic pictures he allegedly shared with others.
