GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The leading candidates in the race for Michigan governor have agreed to two televised debates, including one hosted by WOOD TV8.

The campaigns for the Republican candidate, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, and the Democratic candidate, former Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, made the announcement Friday.

WOOD TV8 invited the candidates to the debate based on specific guidelines laid out by its ownership group, Nexstar Broadcasting Inc.

The debate in Grand Rapids will take place in WOOD TV8’s studio in the Heritage Hill neighborhood. It will air live on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. on WOOD TV8 and woodtv.com and will be moderated by Rick Albin.

The second debate will be held at WDIV-TV’s studio in Detroit on Wednesday, Oct, 24 at 8 p.m.

WOOD TV8, as Your Local Election Headquarters, has hosted a series of debates leading up to the primary election. The four Republican candidates faced off in May. The three Democratic candidates debated in June. A special “To The Point” show also in June featured both Libertarian candidates.
