GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette announced that Lisa Posthumus Lyons will join him on the Republican ticket this fall.
Lyons, formerly a state representative and currently the Kent County clerk, is Schuette’s choice for lieutenant governor.
“I am excited to introduce Lisa Posthumus Lyons as my Lt. Governor running mate! Her leadership on education will help us grow with a better-trained workforce. Lisa is a rising star, dedicated to making Michigan a better place, and an amazing wife and mother,” Schuette said in a tweet Wednesday.

For many Republican voters in West Michigan, Lyons is a recognizable and popular figure, as she has been elected to office four times. Her selection could also help bolster votes in West Michigan, where the Republican ticket may need to over perform depending on voter turnouts in Oakland and Macomb counties.
Schuette, the state’s attorney general, made the announcement at Kent County GOP Headquarters in Grand Rapids.
Lyons is also the daughter of former Senate Majority Leader and lieutenant governor, Dick Posthumus. He also recently served as Gov. Rick Snyder’s chief of staff, which could be seen as a way to smooth tension caused by a primary campaign against current Lt. Gov. Brian Calley.
Snyder has yet to endorse Schuette.
Lyons is focusing on uniting people beyond the general election.
“My goal isn’t just to unite the party after the primary,” she said. “I’m uniting the people around Michigan on an agenda that’s going to move us forward.”
Schuette plans to tout his new running mate during additional campaign events in Lansing and Bloomfield Hills later Wednesday.
Schuette teased last week that his running mate would be a woman, though he wouldn’t reveal her name at the time. Lyons will be confirmed next weekend at the Republican convention.
The Democratic contender for the governor’s seat, former state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, is expected to announce her running mate in the next week or so. Democrats will also ratify their candidate for lieutenant governor next weekend in Lansing.
Snyder cannot run again due to term limits.
